ABSTRACT
The poor level of academic performance as well as anti-social behaviors exhibited in elementary institutions has been linked to lack of school-based counseling and therefore calls for concern. Therefore, this study examined the influence of early childhood counseling on academic attainment and anti-social behaviors of primary school pupils in Calabar Metropolis, Nigeria. Data on academic attainment was obtained from the result of pupils in an Academic Assessment Test (AAT) in mathematics, English language and primary science, while data on anti-social behaviors was obtained from pupil's school report. Ten schools were selected for the study and the random sampling technique was used to select three pupils from each school, making a total of 30 pupils. Two research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of Significance using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The analysis was done with SPSS 18.0. The results of the study showed that school counseling influences academic performance. A strong positive correlation coefficient of 0.95 was obtained, implying that as pupil's participation in school counseling increases, their academic performances will also increase. The result further showed an inverse relationship between school counseling and anti-social behavior, with a correlation coefficient of -0.8 84 implying that for pupils antisocial behaviors to decrease, their participation in school counseling must be encouraged. Therefore the study recommends the inclusion of school-based counseling in all elementary institutions in order to enhance pupil's academic performance and exhibition of acceptable moral and social behavior for the achievement of quality early childhood education.
