ABSTRACT

Phenomenology of religion originated from Germany in the early twentieth century as an influential method for the study of Religionswissenschaft (the scientific study of religion). The method which existed as far back as 1880s, sought to eliminate valuejudgments and pave the way for an objective assessment of religion as a potent force in human and social life. The overriding predetermined focus of the new method was to create understanding (verstehen) of religion, and also grasp its essence (wesen) through a value–free, objective examination of its manifestations (Erscheinungen).
