ABSTRACT

Moral philosophy is subordinate to metaphysics and the philosophy of mind, and anticipates answers to problems as those of the freedom of the will and personal identity. Kant’s fundamental novelty in moral philosophy was the conception of morality as autonomous. In working out his vision of humans as autonomous moral agents, Kant developed new ideas about freedom and the nature of action. The basic elements in Kant’s moral philosophy are morality and categorical imperatives. Kant’s moral philosophy was an advocacy for fairness and egalitarianism. One of the key elements of Kantian moral philosophy is the nature and dynamism of moral obligation. He posits, “If there is anything that we morally ought to do, then we simply ought to do it.” This is relevant to Kant’s moral philosophy because for an action to have moral worth, it must be out of respect for the moral law. This study is a reflection on the contributions of Immanuel Kant to moral freedom and autonomy in an open society.
