ABSTRACT

In a society where crime is on the increase and effort to sustain morality is on the decline, character formation is essential for nation building. This study argues that biblical character formation moulds and shapes people's ideas and perspectives. This is to say that if right foundation is not given to a child, it will affect the child's future life and proper character building. The methodology adopted in this study includes content analysis and theological approach. The study reveals that biblical model for education and character building of the African child stands in remarkable contrast to modern methods. It also holds that the best tool to train African children, is the Bible and that curriculum should include moral education. Our findings reveal that religion is an indispensable factor for character formation and the principles in the Bible should be inculcated into every child. It concludes that, if the role of religion is adopted and applied in child training crime, violence, greed, dishonesty, corruption and other anti-social behaviors shall be reduced to the barest minimum, if not completely eradicated.
