ABSTRACT

Women empowerment is a viable strategy for poverty reduction. It means increasing the ability of women to make purposeful choices and to translate these choices into desired actions and outcomes. The study examined whether the activities of Faith-based Christian organizations in agricultural skill training influence the empowerment of female members in the Southern Senatorial District of Cross River State, Nigeria. The study population was 8800 registered female members domiciled in 159 churches in the area of study, Ten percent (10%) of the population which is 880 respondents constituted the sample which was drawn using stratified and simple random sampling. Questionnaire was employed for data collection. The data collected was analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result revealed that the activities of Faith-Based Christian organizations in agricultural skill training influences the empowerment of female members in six dimensions which include skill acquisition, income generation, decision making, reduction of illiteracy rate, increased food production, and healthy lifestyle. Based on the findings, we recommend that FBCOs should organize more training programmes for female members to acquire the needed skill on modern agricultural technology to boost productivity for increased food production and income generation.
