FUNCTIONAL LITERACY AND POVERTY REDUCTION AMONG ADULT LEARNERS IN THE SOUTHERN SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA - Costly M. Erim



ABSTRACT 

The study investigated the influence of functional literacy on poverty reduction among adult learners in the Southern Senatorial District of Cross River State, Nigeria. One hypothesis was formulated to direct the study. Literature related to the variable under study was reviewed accordingly. An ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study. A sample of four hundred adult learners were randomly selected from a population of four thousand. The selection was done through the simple random sampling technique. A questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to validation by two experts in measurement and evaluation, Faculty of Educational Foundations, University of Calabar. Data collected was analyzed using One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result of the analysis revealed that functional literacy significantly influence poverty reduction among adult learners in the Southern Senatorial District of Cross River State. It was recommended, among other things, that government should ensure that qualified instructors are recruited in literacy centres so that learners could acquire life skills to be self-reliant and functional in society.
