ABSTRACT
This study examined influence of self-concept and family background on retirees’ attitude towards retirement counseling in Calabar Municipality of Cross River State. The hypotheses formulated to guide the study examined influence of self-concept, family size, level of income and level of education on retirees’ attitude towards retirement counseling. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. A sample of 300 respondents was purposively selected from Calabar Municipality. Data were collected by administering questionnaires to the respondents and analyzed using the Independent t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistics. The results of data analysis revealed that the calculated t-values of 3.423, 2.530 and 3.524 were higher than critical t-value of 1.969; and F-value of 11.08 higher than Critical F 4, 295 = 2.41. Thus, the null hypotheses were rejected indicating significant influence of self-concept, family size, level of income and level of education on retirees’ attitude towards retirement counseling. Retirement counseling should be seen as a necessity by all retirees to assist them effectively plan and cope with life after work. Professional counselors in Nigeria should step up efforts to establish counseling clinics where they would be able to provide assistance to retirees by enlightening them on how to effectively utilize their resources during retirement.
